Iron Man/Captain America: Casualties of War (2007) #1
October, 2008, Marvel Comics
Christos N Gage (w), Jeremy Haun (a)

Following the Stamford, Connecticut disaster, the government pushes through the Super-Hero Registration Act, dividing heroes and leading to the Civil War. Feeling that it was time to talk, the two oppositions' leaders - Iron Man and Captain America - meet at the unoccupied Avengers Mansion. Will they agree on a way to end the fighting, or just end up fighting themselves?

Christos N Gage truly shines here, as he masterfully captures not only the tension between the two former teammates, but the various joys and regrets that have defined Iron Man and Captain America's relationship over the years. Peppering the conversation with the history that these two have shared adds to the scope of the situation, and for the time being, closes the chapter in the ongoing saga while setting up the next.

Jeremy Haun must have been giddy to get this assignment, as I'd assume any artist would, because his attention to detail is awesome. The facial expressions, body language, and past scenes are all displayed in a way that you practically feel like you're in the same room as the characters. Wrap it all up with a fitting tribute to the past, and you've got yourself a winner.

Arguably one of the best one-shots to spin out of Civil War, this issue tells you everything you need to know about Iron Man and Captain America… and what they mean to each other.
