JSA (1999) #2September, 1999, DC Comics James Robinson & David Goyer (w), Stephen Sadowski (a) Back at the Brownstone, Scarab explains to the Society that a new Dr. Fate will be born, and that Wesley Dodds had narrowed it down to three infants spread throughout the globe. An immortal that goes by the name of the Dark Lord has been killing "agents of order and chaos" and stealing their power for his own, and the infant destined to be Fate is next. Splitting into three teams, the Society manage to find the infant with Hawkgirl, but the Dark Lord has also found them, and his real name is Mordru… The writing duo of Robinson and Goyer waste little time in ramping up this storyline, which makes for a fast paced and entertaining ride. Despite that, they also manage to develop a few of the characters along the way - such as the Star Spangled Kid's annoyance over not being included - which really gives this issue some meaty sections. Throw in a second cliffhanger in a row, and this arc's got some serious promise. This issue is full of action, which really seems to play to Stephen Sadowski's strengths, and the finished product sings as a result. He's not given a lot of panels to build each separate fight scene, and yet he's able to convey the enormity of the situation with ease. Another strength of his, emotion-filled facial expressions, are on full display as well. As impressed as I was with the first issue in this series, this one's slightly better, and makes me hope that the arc continues the upward trend I've seen in the first two issues of the series. 8.5/10
