Top 10: Iconic Tees
08.28.2008

Who doesn't love tees? Since we all can benefit from another tee or two, and showing some love to our favorite characters is a plus, here's a list of the top 10 comic-related iconic tees, and where to get them.

#10: B.P.R.D.

The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense wants you! Sworn to protect the world from things that go bump in the night, the B.P.R.D. are branded by this unique design, and again, the white-on-black scheme works perfectly. Thanks to a couple of feature films starring everyone's favorite horny red dude (what did I say?) Hellboy, this logo has become more recognizable than ever. Besides, wouldn't you love to see this on the Liz Sherman in your life? Of course you would.

#9: Punisher

Frank Castle is a hero, a vigilante, and a trendsetter to boot. One of the very few characters to wear a tee with his own logo on it, the Punisher goes virtually nowhere without sporting the familiar skull. With a white-on-black color scheme, this is the type of tee that can be found on many non-comic readers as well, simply because the logo looks good. In fact, if Dolph Lundgren had this tee as his primary costume, The Punisher might not have been that bad. Actually, it would have, but at least we can wash away that flick by trying this on for size!

#8: Wonder Woman

Known as an experimenter in fashion herself, Diana Prince knows how to turn heads when she decides it's time for a change. Except that leisure suit spy gig, we'll pretend that didn't happen. Still, when going for the simple tee look, let's focus on the more traditional emblem for this Amazonian instead of the current, more curved version. The gold pops off the black background for attention seekers, and while mostly women will actually don this tee, it's the fellas that will appreciate it more with visions of a spinning Linda Carter dancing in their heads.

#7: Fantastic Four

We're still in the middle of the logo transition these days, with the feature films and current ongoing series sporting an updated '4', but when it comes to pledging your allegiance to Marvel's First Family, you have to go retro. A pleasing blue background with the encircled number is timeless, and while an argument could be made to keep this one as is, one day only the die-hard fans of "The World's Greatest" will be sporting these. Stock up now, you never know what may be available in the future.

#6: Robin

Not as recognizable to the masses as some of the other icons on this list, the Boy Wonder does deserve a mention. A simple logo with sharp colors and a stark red background, this tee just screams "throw me in leotards!" You can save yourself some embarrassment - and awkward explanations - by sticking with only the tee as you envision soaring through Gotham City's skyline alongside a certain bat-s**t crazy vigilante decked out in Kevlar. There are worse things you could be doing on a Friday night.

#5: Captain America

Forget the wings, the 'A' and the scales, Captain America's shield is where it's at. Iconic enough to land a cameo in the Iron Man movie - it's true, it's in there - this logo allows you to forget some of the other… interesting details of the thawed-out Avenger's uniform. Red, white and blue always inspires patriotic feelings, and as a tee, it looks even better. Whether you're taking your shift on the neighborhood watch or combating those pesky, invading flies around the barbecue, this tee let's everyone know you mean business.

#4: Green Lantern

"Let those who worship evil's might, Beware my tee… Green Lantern's light!" White-on-green looks great, and with a sharp logo design, it's really a wonder why more of these aren't seen these days. With an icon that not only graces the title character but an entire corps enlisted to protect every known galaxy as well, this has become one of the most popular icons today. If you happen to be a DC Universe resident you've surely run into this before, besides, Kermit the Frog was wrong, it's very easy being green.

#3: Flash

The familiar lightning bolt over a red background seems like a natural fit when slapped on a tee, especially when the combination of colors and design provides a sense of speed. Luckily for us, this is the icon of the Flash, the fastest man alive, and not Jo-Jo the Turtle. Despite being constantly mistaken by non-readers for Flash Gordon - I have this tee and that drives me nuts - this shirt is actually stylish enough that you won't get too many double-takes in your direction, so wear it with confidence that you won't be singled out as a geek. Not that being a geek is a bad thing.

#2: Batman

Back in 1989, a quirky yet inspired film director named Tim Burton brought us Batman, and the onslaught to our senses of all things batty spread out like wildfire. The iconic emblem was literally everywhere and we couldn't escape from it. As a result, the entire world now knows what this logo means, and it's not about just Bat-Nipples. Yellow-on-black in presentation, this tee is heads and shoulders above the various other color combinations, which include neon (real stealthy), pink (Batman's cute!) and camouflage, for Jungle Action Batman!

#1: Superman

Comics, comic strips, radio, television, feature films, animation… even musicals, Superman has been everywhere, and everywhere he goes, so goes the House of El's emblem. About as iconic as a logo can be, this tee is a true classic and should never be deviated from the blue background and red-and-yellow 'S' in the center (despite other "remixes" like Batman's). While donning this shirt won't grant you super-powers, it will, at the very least, distinguish you as a pop-culture follower.

Honorable Mention: Approved by the Comics Code Authority

Strictly geek-chic, this shirt's a must-have for any hardcore comic nut. In fact, I'll be getting this little number for myself, as I can't believe I don't have it already. I'm already on the hunt for a Seduction of the Innocent tee as well… anyone seen one?
